The Woman Boss Gala’ International Women’s Day: Celebrating Pioneer Women Of Excellence In The Gambia

Published March 22, 2022

Women have, from time been left out history books. Their stance, courage, influences, contributions and importance, have been ridiculed, undermined, and worse, overlooked.

The Woman Boss, in its initiative to commemorate International Women’s Day, held its first ever gala to shine light on women pioneers in The Gambia.

On March 5th, 2022, history was made at the beautiful grounds of Coco Ocean resort and spa, as we celebrated the notable achievements of women pacesetters, women who have spent a meaningful part of their lives defying the odds, redefining their lives while intentionally impacting young minds. It saddens the heart to learn that most of these great women have never been recognized for paving a clear path and through their efforts promoting the ideals of strength, diligence and hard work. This became rather evident when we began contacting the honorees on their nominations. The emotions behind their voices as we recounted their achievements was very fulfilling. One of the offspring of our honoree, Yamundaw Jagne Joof, sobbed after receiving the news of her late mother receiving an award. “My mother spent all her adult life catering to the needs of people, especially women. It is remarkable how, even in her absence she continues to inspire.

Furthermore, after rigorous planning and closing the tab on our countdown. As the sun started to fade, the twilight hues gave a perfect torch for our guests. Sauntering into our cocktail floor in their distinct outfits, each eager for a great evening. Old folks mingled with their fellow peers on cushioned sofas, while the young people wandered around enjoying the fine architect of Coco Ocean. With countless rounds of hors d’oeuvres and enough drinks, our guests prepared themselves to delve into the most anticipated hours of the night.

The differences in their individual paths brought together the success of the event. Aji Jay Ceesay said “When I was an entrepreneur back in the day, my only focus was reaching as many women as I can with my resources. It never crossed my mind that the work I did deserved a clap or pat in back. When I received the call and was informed, I was surprised to learn that people recognize my achievements and appreciate my efforts”. Like Aji Jay and every other honoree, we clapped as loud as we could, smiled so brightly, and wiped a few tears as we watched great women celebrated.

From the banquet to the beautifully written poems by The Woman Boss ambassadors, to the ambient sounds from the renowned kora artist, Sanjally Jobarteh, the eventful night came to end. We closed the curtains to that night’s celebration, but as people come across this and read through, the night is endless, and their achievements lives on.

For these women, The Woman Boss shaped acrylic plaque engraved with respect and love, does not only symbolize their achievements but serves as a reminder. A reminder that we see and hear them. A reminder that they are as deserving as all the people they have impacted and inspired.

To create this environment, where every attendee felt the positivity and resonated with this energy, it took a village. It is one thing to be surrounded with hardworking staffs, but another to receive external support from amazing companies. From the entire Woman Boss team, we would like to extend our gratitude to all our sponsors and volunteers. Your contributions to the success of the gala are highly appreciated.

As this year’s International Women’s Day theme reads #breakthebias, I look forward to more collaborations and contributions from all the systems that have the capacity to make things easier for women. It is unfair to women to keep making things right for the wrongs they did not make. As women continue to face challenges, we will continue to support and provide solutions. Don’t be a bystander, join the movement.

Here is to WOMEN!
